WHY DIWF?

People asked, what is “Wine”? Daejeon came forward.

WHY DIWF

The first wine ever in the Korean history

The early wine histories of Korea are all written by foreigners. The record shows that the first wine introduced to Korea was when King Sejo of the Chinese Yuan Dynasty bestowed wine to his son-in-law, the King of Chungnyeol of Goryeo. The start of vine culture in Korea was in the mid-Joseon Dynasty when vinification was introduced as a medical prescription. In the late-Joseon Dynasty, Catholicism started the culture of the vine in Korea. Christian missionaries grew grapevines and produced wine. In the year 1969, the first end-to-end Korea-produced wine, "Sunry Port," was launched.

"Sunry Port" was produced by "Korean Suntory," a joint corporation of the Korean Agriculture & Fishery Development Corporation(now Korean Agriculture & Fishery Marketing Corporation) and Japanese Suntory Corporation that specialized in wine-producing. In 1968, Korean Suntory invested about 60,000,000₩(53,000 USD) and built the factory at Wolpyeong-dong, Daejeon, Korea. July 1969, it finally produced "Sunry Port" with grapes ripened by Daejeon's sunlight, water, and the wind. A few years later, HaiTai Group merged with Suntory to produce "HaiTai Noble Wine." One after another, Korean corporations started to develop Korean wine with Korean grapes and Korean techniques.

Daejeon started modern wine business in Korea.

Even though wine originates from western culture, Daejeon plays a crucial part in the history of Korean wine. Daejeon International Wine Festival is the only event associated with the Asia Wine Trophy, one of the finest wine competitions/exhibitions in Asia, where world-renowned wine experts come together.
